First Day on Waiheke Island

Thursday 17 January 2008
Having not slept properly for 36+ hours we had a wonderful night's sleep in Jen and Al's spare bed waking up at 8.25 to .....dull and overcast skies!! Where's all this wonderful sunshine?

However, it was perfect weather for a bit of sightseeing. Jen took us to an olive oil factory (Rangihoua), where we were able to taste their produce, not normally my taste though Tom loves olives, but I found I actually liked their various oils. They have a huge wooden chair made from the root of a Swamp Kauri tree, which has been carbon dated even older than Tom.

Then we visited a small brewery where they also make ginger beer and have an archery range and stopped off for lunch at Onetangi Beach - a small beach only 1km long and perfectly straight so there are lots of long straight waves. On the way back home, we stopped off at the only supermarket in town, where they had a green-lipped mussel tank. 80p a kilo, so we had fresh mussels for our starter this evening. Maggie says she has never seen mussels so big. The sun finally came out this evening, as we finished dinner on the deck.

We're still suffering jet lag, and Tom had to have a Siesta this afternoon, and we don't plan on staying up late this evening.

More to follow.
